Chapter 6. Back at the Hospital

“Emily Thomas, you little bitch. I can’t believe you didn’t tell me!” Johnny exclaimed, during breakfast, and everyone turned their heads to look at us. I felt myself going as red as the red velvet muffin.

“Shh!” I exclaimed, putting my finger in front of my mouth. “You don’t need to shout from the rooftops.”

“Sorry, it was the emotion,” Johnny said. Amanda laughed. Kate, Dr. Smith, was also around, eating her green jelly. I definitely didn’t want to tell them about Rucci, especially not with Kate there, who seemed so innocent. “Tell me everything. Every little detail!”

“There’s nothing to say,” I said. Johnny raised his eyebrows, defiantly. I tried to smile convincingly. It didn’t work.

“Come on, everyone in the whole hospital knows about you too already,” Johnny said. Amanda and Kate nodded. I sighed.

“Oh, my God, look at the time!” I exclaimed. “Sorry, must go.”

“Emily Thomas, come back here right now!” Johnny exclaimed, while I got up, grabbed my purse, and started walking towards the door. I was looking back at them and didn’t see where I was going until I smashed myself against someone.

Of course, it was Giovanni Rucci, in all his enormous glory. I blushed so much that I thought I’d die. I was expecting him to not smile. But he looked down at me and did grin.

“I’m sorry, sir…” I said. “I mean, I’m sorry, doctor,” I corrected myself, knowing that everyone was listening to us. He laughed.

“Are you all right? Look at where you’re going, Emily.”

“Yes, I’m fine, and I’m sorry again.”

“It’s all right,” he said and looked at me for a second too long, until he murmured, “listen, would you like to grab a coffee for lunch?”

“Sure!” I said, a little bit more excited than I’d have liked for it to sound. He smiled and nodded. Then, he kept going to get some food.

I looked at Johnny and he was smiling with his thumbs up. I rushed to leave the cafeteria.

All I could think about, then, was our coffee together. I could not focus on the pregnant woman screaming because they wanted to have the baby as quickly as they could. All I could think about was that smile. That’s why I didn’t want to have a man in my life! Medicine has always been a priority in my entire life. My career. Since I was a little girl, I studied hard because I wanted to be a doctor. I couldn’t let myself get distracted by dick.

Yet, there I was, counting the minutes until our lunch break.

When it finally arrived, I took my scrubs out as quick as I could and went to the cafeteria, to wait for him. For a terrifying moment, I thought about the possibility that he had forgotten about it. He wouldn’t come, I was being terribly silly for being so excited. But then I saw him entering the cafeteria and my heart melted again.

Have a little bit of self-respect, Emily!

But I didn’t.

He smiled at me and we started walking, side by side, to a café that was around the hospital.
